Students pick a method the way people pick a seat on a train, out of habit and mild anxiety, and then bend a question to fit it. The order runs the other way. Write the question first, look at its verb, and the design has largely announced itself.

01The verb in the question picks the design

Read your research question aloud and listen to what it is asking for. Does it want a count, a comparison or a relationship: how many, how much, whether, to what extent, is there a difference between. Those are quantitative verbs, and they need numbers, a defined sample and a test.

Or does it want an account: how, why, in what way, what is it like to. Those are qualitative verbs, and they need people talking, a way of recording what they say, and a disciplined method of finding patterns in it.

The commonest mistake is a question wearing the wrong verb. Ask what nurses experience during a night handover and then propose a survey with fixed answer options, and you have quietly replaced experience with agreement scores, which is a different study. Ask whether a checklist reduces missed doses and then propose interviews, and you have a rich description of opinions about a checklist and no evidence about doses. Fix the mismatch by changing the verb until the question genuinely describes what you want to know.

02Choosing by fear, and what it costs

In practice a great many designs are settled on grounds that bear no relation to the question at all. Fear of statistics pushes people towards interviews. A belief that numbers look more serious pushes others towards a survey they will not be able to analyse. Both cost more than they save.

Qualitative work is not the easier option and it is not the softer one. Interviews take longer to arrange than a survey takes to distribute, transcription is slow, and analysis is a long stretch of disciplined work in which you must show why your interpretation is defensible rather than merely plausible. A committee reads that section closely.

Quantitative work is front loaded instead. The thinking happens before any data exists, in the design, the sample and the instrument, and mistakes made there cannot be repaired afterwards by any amount of analysis. No package rescues a bad design; SPSS or R will happily run a test on numbers that had no business being collected in the first place.

Since both routes are respectable, choose between them on the question first and on your own circumstances second. The practical burdens differ sharply, and for a working student the second consideration decides more studies than anyone admits.

Mixed methods is the right answer when your question honestly has two parts, and a poor answer when it is chosen to look thorough. Doing both properly means two designs, two samples or two stages, two analyses and a written account of how the halves speak to each other. That last piece is where most student mixed methods work falls down: two studies are reported side by side and nothing is ever integrated.

At doctoral level it can be worth it, particularly when a number needs explaining and only people can explain it. In a taught programme with one term to work in, a single well executed design almost always outscores two half finished ones, and a supervisor who says so is doing you a kindness.

Whatever you choose, the design is what the review board reads first, and its questions differ by approach. What that board is weighing, and what a second board at your workplace weighs differently, is set out in dual review by two boards. If the design is settled and the analysis is the part with no weeks left in it, that stage can be carried under research support or across a whole project, with the reasoning written so you can defend every step of it yourself.

How do I decide between qualitative and quantitative?

Read your research question and look at its verb. Words like how many, whether, to what extent and is there a difference call for numbers, a sample and a test. Words like how, why and what is it like call for accounts from people and a systematic way of interpreting them. If the verb does not match the design you had in mind, change one of them until they agree.

Is qualitative research easier than quantitative?

No, and choosing it to avoid statistics usually costs more than it saves. Recruiting interviewees is slower than distributing a survey, transcription is laborious, and the analysis requires you to demonstrate why your interpretation is defensible rather than simply asserting it. The work sits at the end of the project, close to your deadline, which is exactly where a working student has least room.

Should I do a mixed methods study?

Only if your question genuinely has two parts that need different evidence. Mixed methods means two designs, two analyses and a written account of how the two halves inform each other, and that last piece is where student projects most often come apart. In a single term, one well executed design generally scores better than two rushed ones.

Can I change my design after the proposal is approved?

Sometimes, and it is rarely free. A change to the design, the sample or the instrument usually requires an amendment to your review board approval before any data is collected under the new plan, and your committee has to agree as well. Both take weeks. That is the strongest argument for spending an extra fortnight on the question before anything is submitted.
